I need to look outside of China and learn from the experiences from other developed countries, especially those with different cultural systems in place. In brief The Postgraduate of China-EU Cultural Curatorship Studies (PG China-EU CCS) is unique in Belgium. It will provide you with knowledge, skills and competences in the field of curating and crafting culture from intercultural perspectives. Hands-on experience and immersion in the professional field through an internship in China or Europe allows you to become a skilful intercultural communicator and cultural curator. The PG China-EU CCS targets Belgian/European and Chinese students, with interest in contemporary society, culture and arts in Europe and China and the aspiration to work in the sector at the intersection of culture, art and communication.

In detail Curating is ubiquitous today. Since the 1990s it has morphed into a creative activity. But how does one become a cultural curator? The programme aims to train you as both a knowledge creator and a intercultural communicator. You will experiment with different formats, different ways of experiencing while creating different meanings. As a contemporary curator you will challenge old formats by re-inventing novel ones, often building on history and previous experiences. As a communicator you will convey rich curatorial data to a larger public, both online and offline. The PG China-EU CCS is unique as it goes beyond mainstream curatorship programmes that operate within the museum sector focusing mostly on high culture. In Flanders in Belgium there are a handful of curatorial studies programmes. The PG China-EU CCS diverges from existing programmes in distinctive three ways: 1 Our programme interprets ‘curatorship’ in a larger sense where ‘curating’ takes place with spill-overs into culture and material culture. 2 A larger geographical scope. Geographically we cover both Europe and China. 3 You will learn how to interact with multilingualism, interculturalism and mobility. The creativity of the curator is key in our programme.

During the study period but especially when conducting the internship in Belgium (for Chinese students) or in China (for Belgian/European students) you will be encouraged to develop your own curatorial language and narrative and to communicate and present your curatorial project in the different strata of society, including the market. In case of force majeure (natural disasters, pandemic, wars, social upheaval, etc.) the internship in China can be replaced by an internship@home (in Belgium) that has a China-related component. The PG China-EU CCS is open to European and Chinese students who have already obtained a Master’s degree. The language of instruction is English and some knowledge of Chinese for European students is a plus but not a requirement The programme has a workload of 55 ECTS credits.

Understanding China - and more specifically being able to make sense of the current Chinese society in transition - is key to understand the world in the 21st century. Programme structure The PG China-EU CCS consists of a balanced mix of theory and practice. In the first semester you will be trained in cultural policy in Europe and China, intercultural and multilingual interaction, different research methods and you will learn good practices from practitioners in the curating sector. In the second semester you will conduct an internship either in China and Europe. This internship is carefully prepared and curated by the organisers of the PG China-EU CCS. The outcome of the internship is that you will be able to conduct a curatorial project. Overall, the teaching method is interactive and practice-oriented. The evaluation forms are: paper, oral and written exam during or at the end of the first semester.

Job opportunities There is a high demand for cultural curators who are able to communicate interculturally and curate for a global audience while at the same time closely connected to the local community and culture. The cultural traineeship providers both in Belgium as in China have shown keen interest in this programme and its graduates.

Testimonial I’m currently a first-year PhD candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (department of social and cultural anthropology) with research interest in contemporary Chinese creative heritage economy and societal role of museums. Both the academic coursework and the internship parts in the Postgraduate program China-Europe Cultural Curatorship Studies offer me the opportunity to see the art industry from the production side in depth, which enhances not only my understanding in producer-consumer dynamics in content generation, but also widen my view on curatorship by immersing in a broader socio-cultural context. Being one of the cultural centers of Europe, the art sector in Antwerp is also unique in its diversity and activeness. Xiaodan Feng, student 2021-22
