We zullen volgens mij evolueren naar meer hybride werksystemen, en zo kan je ook de groeiers in je community houden.” Over de grenzen heen In een tijd waarin alles razendsnel verandert, is tien jaar vooruitblikken moeilijk, maar wan- neer Geelhand de Merxem naar de nabije toekomst kijkt, ziet hij drie belangrijke uit- dagingen op de agenda staan: “Ten eerste willen we onze activiteiten ook op internati- onaal niveau verder ontplooien. The Beacon mag dan wel gesticht zijn door Antwerpse partners en het gebouw staat nu eenmaal in Antwerpen, maar technologie is grenzeloos.” “Daarnaast werken we aan een flexibeler aan- bod voor onze leden. Binnen onze community moeten ook de niet-residenten, die geen permanente werkplek hebben, nog meer mogelijkheden krijgen om hier een aantal dagen per jaar in een flex-office te werken, of om gebruik te maken van onze vergader- zalen of evenementenruimte. Eigenlijk moet The Beacon een soort clubhuis worden, waar leden kunnen gebruikmaken van de infra- structuur om hun ding te doen, pitches of pre- sentaties te geven, mensen te ontvangen en te ontmoeten. Daarin zit nog veel potentieel.” “Tot slot willen we een aantal ruimtes binnen The Beacon herbestemmen. Op de zesde ver- dieping hebben we zonet een professionele opnamestudio gebouwd die de leden kunnen gebruiken voor video-opnames, livestreams, webinars… We hebben hier ook een fantas- tisch terras met zicht op de Schelde dat als een unieke eyecatcher ingericht zal worden zodat mensen ook buiten kunnen werken, vergaderen, ontspannen.” Met wat geluk komt er helemaal boven op het gebouw ooit een skybar , en zo wordt de mop aan het begin van dit dossier dan toch werkelijkheid. University of Antwerp and TheBeacongo hand inhand The year 2018 marked the launch of The Beacon: an innovation hub brought about by the joint efforts of the University of Antwerp, Antwerp city council, the Port of Antwerp, Imec, Agoria and Lantis. While each partner has its own ap- proach, they all share the same ambition: to cooperate better with each other and with the business community, and to es- tablish a centre of expertise on digital technology in Antwerp. The partnership was a success. Three years later, The Beacon is a lively community of 85 mem- bers. It is headed by Michaël Geelhand de Merxem, a Political Science graduate. ‘Our com- munity is working on a variety of technologies, including IoT, AI and drones. Many of the companies located here are not start-ups, but are already in the next stage of the life-cycle. They want to grow, so they’re looking for contacts, brains and funding.’ Maarten Weyn, a professor of industrial sciences, has been involved since the beginning. He has established two spin-offs – Aloxy and CrowdScan – both of which are located at the innovation hub. Many University of Antwerp graduates work at The Beacon, either helping to grow start-ups like Docklow and SkyeBase, or working for major players like Microsoft, which are also active at the hub. E
