SciencePark toget extraboost TheUniversity of Antwerp’s Science Park is booming. And that’s an understatement. On the table is amaster plan that includes five additional buildings to be completed in 2020. The Science Park in Niel nowcovers around 10 000 squaremetres of floor space. Themaster planwill add another 18 000 squaremetres to that, aswell as extra space for visitors and twomulti-storey car parks. The new buildingswill include two for companies in the pharmaceutical industry and a base for Essenscia, the umbrella organisation for chemical and life sciences companies. "It will be the ultimate testing ground formajormechanical and technological innovations in logistics", says Silvia Lenaerts, Vice-Rector for Valorisation&Development at UAntwerp. The Science Park now focusesmore on valorisation, partly as a result of her influence over the last three years. "Fundamental research used to be the end point, but there is nowmore of a link to applied research and to the valorisation aspect", adds Ronny Blust, Vice-Rector for Research. "What are the routeswe need to take so that they can turn into valorisation routes in the longer term?We didn’t use to do that enough." TheUniversity of Antwerp sees that as a very important development. Not only today, but also in the future. "That’swhy the Science Park is nowbeing promoted as a natural part of the university.
