This is what all of the experts are saying. In addition to a new economic model, however, a shift in the consumer mentality is needed, as well as industrial investments and concrete governmental action. The University of Antwerp is making its contribution through scientific research. For example, take Karine Van Doorsselaer and Els Du Bois of the Department of Product Development. These researchers note that product developers play an important role: they must ensure that an article can last as long as possible. As they say, however, “In the end, it’s all up to the user.” The environmental economist Steven Van Passel is focusing on the price tag. “Although there is a niche that will always pay more for a circular product, the challenge is to offer a particular added value to the average consumer.” Alumnus Tom Duhoux is offering this added value: he is bringing used jeans to the market. Na zijn studie kwamhij terecht in de afvalverzameling en -verwerking, kreeg hij de circulaire microbe te pakken, startte een adviesbureau en besloot zijn ervaring daarna in praktijk om te zetten. “Het huidige lineaire economische systeem is niet vol te houden. De meeste bedrijven kunnen de omslag niet meer maken omdat ze vastzitten in een perfect geoptimaliseerde lineaire waardeketen. Ik probeer een steen te verleggen door duurzame kwaliteit te brengen. De trend duurzaamheid is niet meer te stoppen, maar we botsen tegen de limieten van ons eigen systeem.” “In de natuur is er niets lineair. Alles is altijd een voedingsbron voor iets anders. Je hoeft geen ecologische romanticus te zijn om te zien dat we op een afgebakende planeet zit- ten, waar we slim moeten omgaan met wat in het gesloten systeem zit.
