66 The patterns hiding underneath The intervention of a wooden sculpture from the baroque-era KEYWORDS: Overpaint; estofado; wooden sculpture; polychromy; decoration. The studied wooden sculpture, a figure of a Saint, was made around the late 17th beginning of the 18th century, in Portugal. This piece presents a good quality, both in its carving and decoration, that are associated with this period of time. When the sculpture first entered the Conservation Laboratory, the vestments were completely overpainted. Therefore, in order to unveil the underlying polychromy, survey areas were opened and laboratory analyses of the cross-sections were made. A new adjacent polychromy was then discovered. Thus, due to the superior quality of the underlying layer, it was agreed to remove the overpaint. After the removal it was possible to observe an estofado, with several patterns and decorative solutions This presentation will focus on the study of the estofado, its construction technique and the identification of the several decorative patterns found on the vestments. 1dvilasboasvitoria[at]gmail.com
